Breast prosthesis rupture
July 10, 2025 Breast Surgery 4 min read

The medical equivalent of the expression "silicone explosion", which is frequently used among the public, is breast prosthesis rupture. Thanks to current implant technologies, this situation is much less common than in the past and is often not experienced as a sudden, dramatic situation as depicted in the movies.

What Exactly Does Rupture Mean?

Rupture is the deterioration of the outer sheath of the implant. In some cases, the patient does not notice this immediately. Especially in modern silicone gel prostheses, the content is more cohesive; that is, its fluidity is limited and its tendency to disperse is low.

What Findings Raise Doubt?

  • Noticeable change in breast shape
  • Increased stiffness or asymmetry
  • Difference in tenderness or feeling of fullness
  • Silent rupture detected by imaging in controls

What to Do?

In case of doubt, examination and appropriate imaging are required. Not every rupture is of the same urgency; The decision is made based on the type of implant, its placement, the patient's complaints and examination findings.

In summary; The expression “silicon exploded” often does not fully reflect the truth. The current approach is to make an accurate assessment without panicking.

Does Rupture Always Cause Symptoms?

No. In some cases, especially called silent rupture, the patient may not notice a significant change from the outside. Therefore, regular control and imaging when necessary are important.

Why is the Control Plan Valuable?

  • The general condition of the implant is monitored
  • Capsule structure and hardness are evaluated
  • Asymmetry or shape change is noticed early
  • Decisions are made with clear data instead of unnecessary anxiety

The main point here is not panic, but a culture of follow-up. Conscious follow-up in patients with breast implants allows possible problems to be managed early and more calmly.
