Buttock aesthetic methods

What are the Buttock Aesthetics Methods?

There is no single method in buttock aesthetics; Different techniques are used depending on the targeted volume, tissue structure and preference.

Fat Injection (BBL)

It is the most frequently preferred method. Your own fat taken from another part of the body is injected into the buttocks. Fat is removed from the unwanted area and natural volume is added to the buttocks.

Buttock Lift (Gluteoplasty)

If there is sagging buttock skin after major weight loss, the excess skin is removed and the buttock tissue is moved up. This is for tightening and lifting purposes rather than volume.

Which one is suitable for you?

  • Volume desire + sufficient fat → BBL
  • Sagging → buttock lift
  • Both together → combined approach

When Is a Buttock Implant an Option?

Besides fat injection and buttock lift, a third option is the silicone buttock implant. It is usually placed through an incision in the fold between the buttocks, either within the muscle or beneath the membrane that surrounds it. It may be considered for very slim people who do not have enough fat to transfer, or for those who want a greater increase in volume than fat can provide.

Implants have limits, too: they concentrate volume in one part of the buttocks and do not, on their own, shape the transition from the waist to the buttocks or the side contour. Wound-healing problems, fluid collection under the skin, infection and implant displacement are among the risks that should be discussed. Sitting and walking may be more uncomfortable in the first weeks than after fat injection, and it should be clear from the outset that the implant may need to be replaced or removed in the future.

Injectable Volume: What Should You Watch Out For?

Ready-made substances injected into the buttocks with a needle are sometimes presented as a non-surgical shortcut. Fillers that the body gradually breaks down, such as hyaluronic acid, can be used for small contour corrections; however, the amount needed for meaningful buttock volume is large and the effect is temporary. Injecting liquid silicone or similar permanent synthetic substances into the buttocks is not considered a safe method, because it can cause serious problems such as hardening, inflammation, migration of the substance to other areas and blockage of blood vessels. These substances often cannot be completely removed from the body.

  • Ask for the name and type of the substance in writing.
  • Make sure the procedure is performed by a physician under appropriate conditions.
  • If any substance has previously been injected into your buttocks, be sure to mention it during the consultation; the plan may change accordingly.

Which Findings Guide the Choice of Method?

The examination is done standing, from the front, the side and the back. The decision is usually based on weighing the following points together:

  • Fat available for transfer: Is there enough fat on the abdomen, waist and back? If not, the volume that can be achieved with fat injection remains limited.
  • Skin condition: Is the skin elastic, or has it clearly sagged? Adding volume alone to loose skin can make the buttocks look heavier.
  • The desired change: Is the goal volume, lifting, or correcting the contour around the buttocks? Sometimes slimming the waist and flanks alone makes the buttocks look more defined.
  • Weight history and plans: If your weight is still changing or you are considering a pregnancy in the near future, the timing may need to be reconsidered.
  • General health: Smoking, anemia, a history of blood clots and chronic illnesses affect which method and what extent of surgery are appropriate.
  • Time available for recovery: Responsibilities such as work and childcare affect planning, especially for methods that require restrictions on sitting.

In some people the methods are combined: an implant can provide the basic volume while a small amount of fat injected around it softens the transitions; after major weight loss, a buttock lift can be supported with volume from the person's own tissue or with fat injection.

Where the incision is planned when sagging and volume loss occur together is explained in the article on buttock lift, and into which layer and how the fat is injected is described in the article on fat injection (BBL) in buttock aesthetics. The method that suits you is decided with your surgeon by considering your examination findings and expectations together.

"The aim of buttock aesthetics is to obtain a natural form that is not exaggerated but proportionate to the body. The correct method is determined according to your texture and goal."

Frequently Asked Questions

Transfer of the patient's own fat, placement of silicone implants and, if there is sagging, buttock lift surgery.

If there is enough fat to harvest from the body, fat transfer is preferred. If fat is insufficient, an implant is considered; if there is excess skin, a lift is considered.

Yes. A lift and fat transfer are often planned together, so that both sagging and volume are addressed in the same session.
