How to Sit After Buttock Aesthetic Surgery?

The question most often asked after buttock fat injection (BBL) concerns the sitting rule. This rule is important for the permanence of the injected fat.

Why Is Sitting Restricted?

In the first weeks, the injected fat must adhere to the tissue. Pressure directly on the buttocks can negatively affect this retention and the vitality of the fat. That's why sitting is limited in the first period.

How to Sit?

  • Avoid sitting directly on the buttocks in the first weeks
  • Putting weight on the thigh with the special BBL pad
  • Preferring the prone or side position while sleeping

How Long Does It Take?

This restriction is usually stricter for the first 2-3 weeks and then gradually relaxed. Duration varies from person to person and is updated at follow-up appointments.

The Right Positions During the Day and Preparing Your Home

  • When you have to sit: Place the BBL pillow under the backs of your thighs, not under your buttocks; your buttocks should remain free behind the pillow. Your weight rests on your thighs and feet.
  • Getting out of bed: First roll onto your side, let your legs hang off the bed and, supporting yourself with your arms, stand up without passing through a sitting position.
  • On the toilet: Ask your surgeon how and for how long you may sit; brief sitting is usually allowed.
  • While eating and working: Setting up a counter or table at a height you can use while standing reduces the need to sit for long periods.
  • While sleeping: When lying on your stomach or side, alternating between both sides keeps pressure from always building up on the same side.

Trying to adapt to this routine after surgery is harder than preparing for it beforehand. Getting the BBL pillow you will use in advance and trying it at home, choosing a surface in the kitchen and work area that you can use while standing, and putting frequently used items at a height you can reach without bending all make the first days easier. If you work at a desk, discuss with your employer beforehand whether it is possible to work standing or with short breaks during the first weeks. Loose clothes that open at the front and do not squeeze the waist also make it easier to dress over the compression garment. Planning the journey home before surgery also keeps you from sitting unnecessarily long on the first day.

Car Journeys and Flights

Driving is generally not recommended in the early period. As a passenger on short trips, it may be possible to rest your weight on your thighs using the BBL pillow; wear your seat belt in all cases. Long journeys and flights create both pressure on the buttocks and, because of immobility, a risk of blood clots in the leg veins. If you are coming from abroad or from another city, discuss your return date with your surgeon in advance; during the journey, wear the recommended compression stockings, stand up and take a few steps at every opportunity, and drink enough fluids.

Common Mistakes

  • Sitting on a soft cushion placed under the buttocks; a soft surface does not remove the pressure.
  • Sinking into a soft armchair or lying on your back for long periods
  • Trying to get around the restriction by sitting sideways with your weight on one buttock; this concentrates the pressure on one side.
  • Stopping the restriction early because you feel well
  • Using the pillow only at home and not taking it with you in the car, at work or when visiting others
  • Staying immobile while avoiding pressure; short, frequent walks are necessary for circulation
  • Not wearing the recommended compression garment regularly over the areas where fat was removed

Which Symptoms Should You Report Right Away?

  • Sudden shortness of breath, chest pain or palpitations; this requires emergency medical help
  • Increasing swelling in one leg, or pain or warmth in the calf
  • Fever, or increasing redness, warmth or discharge on the buttocks or in the areas where fat was removed
  • Rapidly growing, tense swelling on one side of the buttocks

Into which layer and how the fat is injected is described in the article fat injection (BBL) in buttock aesthetics, and the criteria by which the result is assessed are explained in the article natural results in buttock aesthetics. When the sitting restriction can be relaxed varies from person to person; follow your surgeon's advice at your check-ups.

"The rules of the first weeks in BBL directly determine the permanence of the result. A little patience is a valuable investment for a permanent and natural result."

Frequently Asked Questions

If fat transfer was performed, sitting is avoided for the first 2 weeks; for the following 4-6 weeks, you sit only for short periods using a special cushion.

Pressure interferes with the blood supply that newly transferred fat cells need and increases the rate at which fat is absorbed; this directly affects how lasting the result is.

Lying face down or on your side; if you need to sit, use a cushion that supports the back of your thighs and take a break every hour.
