Breast Lift (Mastopexy): Is an Implant Always Necessary?

"I want to have a breast lift, but I am uncomfortable with the idea of having a prosthesis." I hear this sentence very often. And I completely understand this concern. The good news is: Breast lift (mastopexy) does not always require a prosthesis.

It is possible to obtain a beautiful, natural and balanced breast form by simply reshaping the existing tissue in line with the patient's own tissue structure, breast volume and targeted form.

Why Does Breast Sagging Occur?

Breast sagging (ptosis) inevitably occurs in many women over time. The main reasons are:

  • Hormonal changes and tissue stretching after pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Loss of elasticity of the skin with weight gain and loss
  • Loosening of connective tissue with aging
  • Genetic factors and tissue structure

The degree of sagging is classified from mild to severe; Which technique will be applied is determined according to this classification.

Lift Without Prosthesis: When Is It Possible?

Situations where only mastopexy is sufficient without the use of a prosthesis:

  • Breast tissue volume is sufficient (usually cups C and above)
  • There is sagging but it is not accompanied by serious volume loss.
  • The patient does not want a larger breast size; She just wants her current breast to become erect.

In this case, the nipple and areola are moved to a higher position, the existing tissue is reshaped and a taut, high form is obtained. The result is completely natural; because you are using your own texture.

"Breast lift is not always a procedure performed with a prosthesis. If the breast tissue and volume are sufficient, we lift the breast by moving the nipple to where it should be and shaping the existing tissue. The aim: a natural, balanced and long-lasting form."

When is Mastopexy + Prosthesis Combination Required?

In some patients, there is a serious volume loss along with sagging. Especially in cases where breast tissue shrinks significantly after breastfeeding, both lift and volume increase may be needed. In these cases, a comprehensive result is achieved by applying a prosthesis or fat injection together with mastopexy.

Techniques Used

Vertical Incision (Lollipop) Technique

A vertical incision is made around the areola and downwards. It is suitable for moderate sagging. The track area is more limited than the horizontal technique.

Anchor Technique

It is preferred in cases of severe sagging and large breast volumes. Incisions are made in three areas: around the areola, vertical line and horizontal incision from below. It offers more comprehensive shaping opportunities.

Recovery Process

After mastopexy surgery, sports bra use continues for 6-8 weeks. Swelling and tenderness return to normal in the first few weeks. Since the stitches are absorbable, they do not need to be removed separately. The final shape takes place within 3-6 months. The scars fade over time; It is largely hidden in a light colored bra.
