Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty): A More Refreshed Look

Eyes are one of the most expressive points of the face. However, with aging, sagging in the upper eyelid and bags and swelling in the lower eyelid; It can lead to a tired, sad or even old expression. blepharoplasty, that is, eyelid aesthetics; By correcting these problems surgically, it provides both a younger and more vigorous appearance and, in some cases, a wider field of vision.

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty; It is an operation in which excess skin, fat and muscle tissue on the upper and/or lower eyelids are surgically removed. Upper lid blepharoplasty removes sagging skin and occasionally accumulated fat pads, making the eye appear more open and alert. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty eliminates the surgical cause of dark circles along with under-eye bags and swelling.

Who Does It Apply To?

Eyelid aesthetics is evaluated in the following cases:

  • Significant sagging of the upper eyelid that narrows the field of vision
  • Drooping eyelids causing a tired or aged expression
  • Noticeable bags and swellings on the lower eyelid
  • "Weepy" appearance caused by under-eye hollowness and fat accumulation
  • Adults in good general health with reasonable expectations

How is the Surgery Done?

Blepharoplasty is usually performed under local anesthesia and sedation, sometimes with general anesthesia. Surgery time varies between 1-2 hours depending on its scope.

Upper Lid Blepharoplasty

The incision is placed within the natural crease of the upper eyelid. In this way, the scar becomes almost invisible when closed. After excess skin and, if necessary, fatty tissue are removed, it is closed with thin sutures.

Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty

An incision can be made on the lower lid, just below the eyelash line, or fat can be removed from the inner surface of the eye (transconjunctival route). In the second method, no scars remain on the outer surface and healing occurs faster.

"Eyelid aesthetics is among the procedures that make a big difference with a small intervention. Most of my patients say that they look 'rested' and 'energetic' after the surgery. This also offers a psychological renewal beyond the surgical intervention."

Both Aesthetic and Functional Benefits

Blepharoplasty has not only an aesthetic but also a functional dimension. Excessive sagging of the upper eyelid can narrow the field of vision and make daily activities difficult. This condition is called "ptosis" and is a medical indication that may be covered by insurance in some patients. Thanks to blepharoplasty, the field of vision is expanded, chronic tension in the eyebrow muscles is reduced and headaches can be relieved.

Recovery Process

Slight swelling and bruising occur in the first 24-48 hours; This is completely normal. Applying cold compresses and keeping the head elevated helps reduce swelling. Sutures 5-7. taken per day. Most patients can easily return to their social life after 1 week and to their work life after 2 weeks. Final scar maturation is completed within 6-12 months, and the scar becomes practically invisible as it remains within the natural fold of the eyelid.
