Compression Garments After Surgery: Why Are They So Important?

One of the most frequently asked questions after plastic surgery is: "Is the corset really that important?" My answer is always the same: Yes, it is extremely important. And this is not just a matter of aesthetic preference.

Postoperative corset; It is an integral part of the healing process in terms of edema control, tissue harmony and reducing the risk of complications. In this article, I explain why the use of corsets is so important and the principles of correct use.

What is the use of a corset?

1. Edema Control

The body's natural response after surgery is to create fluid accumulation (edema) in the surgery area. The corset applies homogeneous pressure to this area, facilitating the drainage of lymph fluid and helping to resolve edema faster. In this way, both swelling and pain decrease at an earlier stage.

2. Adaptation of Tissues to the New Contour

The skin and tissue layers in the surgery area reorganize over several months to adapt to their new shape. The corset serves as a supportive mold in this process; It makes it easier for the tissues to fit into the desired contour and contributes to the clearer result earlier.

3. Reduces the Risk of Seroma

Especially in surgeries involving large areas such as abdominoplasty and liposuction, fluid accumulation (seroma) may occur under the skin. The corset helps close these gaps with its constant pressure, significantly reducing seroma formation.

4. Provides Comfort and Support

The corset makes it easier to move, sit and walk in the first days after surgery. Light pressure applied to the abdominal area also reduces pain caused by muscle and skin tension.

"The use of a corset during the recovery process after plastic surgery is not only an aesthetic choice; it is a powerful aid that reduces possible edema, supports the adaptation of tissues to the new contour and reduces the risk of complications. For this reason, I recommend regular use for at least 4-6 weeks after most procedures."

After Which Surgeries Is Corset Recommended?

  • Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)
  • liposuction
  • 360° Body Lift
  • Uyluk germe
  • Breast enlargement and lift (in the form of a sports bra)

How and How Long Should a Corset Be Used?

Duration and method of use vary depending on the operation performed and the healing process. General guidelines are as follows:

  • First 2-4 weeks: It is removed throughout the day, including at night, and only during showering.
  • 4-8. haftalar: Use continuously during the day, preferably at night.
  • Week 8 and beyond: Gradual reduction according to doctor's recommendation.

The corset should not be too tight; It should be able to breathe easily and not cause pressure sores on the skin. It is important to receive guidance during the post-operative check-up to choose the right size and model.

What Does Leaving the Corset Too Early Cause?

Leaving the corset before the recommended time; It may lead to prolongation of edema, delayed tissue adaptation and increased risk of seroma. In addition, it can extend the time required for the resulting shape to fit perfectly. In short: although some discomfort is normal, patience directly affects the quality of long-term results.
